"As a parent, it can be really difficult to know when its time to seek help to address a possible developmental problem with your child. Your instincts are raging and you feel in your heart that there is something not quite right, but your pediatrician tells you time and time again, "Lets wait and see". You may mention your concerns to your friends and they tell you what they think you want to hear which is, "Well lots of kids do that! I wouldn't worry about that!". You may then turn to your parents, or a parenting mentor from an older generation and they usually say, "Oh they will grow out of it!". But your instinct keeps tugging at you. This is what happened to me, but by the time my daughter was 18 months old I was tired of hearing that I was just being a nervous mother and I contacted Early Intervention. I was SO NERVOUS to make that call! EI made it easy for me, listening to my concerns and sending several therapists out to my house. The first therapist that came to my house was Nisha Sanghvi from Integrated Pediatrics. She sat with my daughter and I and did an evaluation and she was the very first person in my life who said, "You are not crazy. This child needs help". My daughter began receiving treatment for what was eventually diagnosed as a high functioning form of autism. Today she is a THRIVING 3rd grader, in a regular classroom, who enjoys friends and extra curricular activities just like any other 8 year old. She has her challenges, but we are better equipped to handle them thanks to her therapists. Her success is a result of her having gotten help early and often, by a team of people who worked WITH me and helped me help her. That help not only helped my daughter, but changed our entire family dynamic for the better and made life a lot easier to manage. I can't even imagine where we would be if I had not made that call."
